The Pill And Its Connection To Crohn’s Disease and Gut Inflammation? (Dr Hagmeyer Video #2 of 6)

Q: Is the Pill wrecking Your Gut and Causing IBS, SIBO, Crohns, Leaky Gut and Intestinal Inflammation?

Welcome back to the video series titled, “Is the Pill wrecking your Gut?”

Last week I did a video on Birth control pills and Gut Dysbiosis, I talked about the importance of the microbiome and how metabolic diseases like thyroid disease, heart disease, Diabetes, obesity and mental health disorders are tied into the gut.

I talked about several ways the pill and other methods of oral contraceptives cause disruptions to not only the gut microflora but also the vaginal flora leading to yeast and bacterial infections.

I showed testing that I use in practice that helps us understand how to best support and heal the gut microbiome,

I also talked about chemical sensitivities and how changes in the gut microbiome and gut dysbiosis can cause ones immune system to lose tolerance and overreact to not only healthy foods but also chemicals in the environment like shampoos, perfumes, etc.

Today’s video, I will be spending some time talking about how the birth control pill and synthetic hormones can raise levels of inflammation throughout the GI tract and a very important stool marker that shows us the degree of inflammation.

This is especially important if you have chronic diarrhea, if you have Leaky gut, if you suffer with anxiety depression, thyroid disease, brain fog, joint pain or any other health problem related to Brain gut connection and inflammation.

Harvard Researchers had this to say about the Pill and Crohn’s Disease

Here is something I believe that is worth considering- In one of the largest studies of its kind, Harvard researchers looked at the health records of over 230,000 women and what they found was that woman who took the birth control for five years or more years Tripled the chance of developing Crohn’s disease.

I’ll say that again in case you missed it- woman who took the pill for 5 or more years tripled the chances of developing Crohn’s disease.

Now…I work with many patients who have Crohn’s and other kinds of inflammatory bowel disease and I will tell you that it is a debilitating gastrointestinal disorder and sometime can be a life-threatening disease.

You have bloody diarrhea which causes anemia (low Iron and Oxygen in your body), you have abdominal pain, you have joint pain, you have ulcers in your mouth, you can’t gain weight no matter what you do, you have nausea, you have fevers, you develop fissures in your rectum, you are always planning your life around the nearest bathroom- and that’s just it on the surficial level. It is absolutely terrible!

So let’s stop there for just a moment and dissect that a bit.

So while YOU heard me say that woman who took the birth control for five years or more years tripled the chance of developing Crohn’s disease,

Intestinal Inflammation like that seen in Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Linked to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia

I heard autoimmune disease! That’s what Crohn’s disease is. Crohn’s happens when the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the digestive tract causing it to become inflamed and when it becomes inflamed- Not only do you experience all those symptoms I just mentioned, but what if I told you that intestinal inflammation has now been linked to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Would that surprise you? Would that make you think differently of the pill and other forms of unnatural hormones? If the pills can cause inflammation in the gut and gut inflammation has been tied into Parkinsons, Alzheimers and Dementia

Do you think it could be causing your brain fog, depression, headaches and anxiety?

Maybe the problem is not in your head after all? Perhaps it’s in your gut? When there is fire in the gut- there is fire in the brain!

Take a look at this study that came out in 2016. Risk of inflammatory Bowel Disease with oral contraceptives and menopausal hormone therapy.

This is one of many studies that show that the pill and other forms of unnatural hormone replacement similar to those found in woman who take HRT or fertility shots

1-Induce Changes to the Gut Microbiome (this is called Gut Dysbiosis)

2-Creates inflammatory environment and

3-Create an increase in gut permeability another words (they cause a leaky gut) and these changes, alter the immune system, and polarize the immune system towards autoimmunity and in this particular case, towards Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis disease.

And this is a really bad thing! Inflammation in the gut creates total havoc on the body!

This Patient was experiencing Symptoms of Brain Fog, Depression and memory loss

This patient had a feeling that her bowels would never empty, she would experience constipation and the next day she would have diarrhea, she would pass large amount of foul smelling gas- it was very embarrassing and emotionally it affected her sex life with her husband.

She experienced frequent belching, burping, bloating, she had difficulty digesting fruits and vegetables. She was fatigued all the time, Depressed and felt like she was losing her mind. She had very low level of Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin A

On further testing, I discovered she also had an Autoimmune Thyroid disease known as Hashimotos, which is something we see very often- If I was to estimate how often I see it, I would estimate that 60-70% of my IBS/IBD patients also have thyroid problems.

Not only did she have all these GI symptoms– But like many patients, surprising she had a normal colonoscopy, normal endoscopy. So her primary care doctors were not really interested in trying to understand what was wrong with her.

This marker that you see here was done using a Functional stool test– The marker is called Fecal Calprotectin- you see where it says normal is less than 50 and her result was 1404. I show you this because this marker is 7x the upper limit.

Fecal Calprotectin indicates the migration of neutrophils to the intestinal mucosa, which occurs during intestinal inflammation, including inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease.

Image result for calprotectin

You will also notice that levels >200 indicated that further investigation is needed. This patient had further investigation from her Gastroenterologist and after having a colonoscopy- they said there was nothing they could do- because it was normal.

What You Should Remember From Today’s Video

#1 The pill can cause inflammation in the gut and when we have inflammation in the gut that will affect the Brain-This is why we see many problems such as depression, anxiety, chronic headaches, etc

#2 The pill can cause a leaky gut and a leaky gut can set the stage for Hashimoto’s Thyroid disease, Type I diabetes, Metabolic syndrome, Heart disease or other kinds of autoimmune diseases- If you already have been diagnosed with an Autoimmune disease, I recommend you find out if you have gut inflammation, leaky gut, and then what caused your leaky gut.

#3 The Pill Cause Gut Dysbiosis- we talked about this in the first video

If you are struggling to find answers to your chronic health problem, and you have hit a dead end with conventional medicine, please don’t give up

Perhaps you need a set of fresh eyes looking at your case, someone who will look at the BIG picture and start unraveling these connections.

I hope that you will tune into the next video where I will be talking more about The Pill and Leaky gut, the different kinds of Leaky gut and what you need to do to heal leaky gut if you been on the pill.
