6 Red Flags your IBS is Related To Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Hey folks Dr Hagmeyer Here with just a short video on the similarity between the symptoms of IBS and a condition known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Today I want to give you 6 of the most common symptoms people who have SIBO suffer with and some of the disease that we often see SIBO related to.

Really quickly SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and what happen in sibo is that the bacteria in the large intestines migrate up into the smaller intestines where they don’t belong. This is a huge problem for those who go from one GI doctor to the next and every doctor tells you that you colonoscopy and endoscopy is normal.

Keep In mind that while it’s great to have these cameras and scopes they can’t reach all 25 feet of your intestines. So while your doctor may say everything looks good- this may not be the whole truth. What they are really saying is that with the limitations of technology, we don’t see cancer, we don’t see the signs of celiac disease, we don’t see the signs Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis. So by exclusion by diagnosis— you have IBS. Well that doesn’t really help most people.

So… I want to give you 6 of the most common symptoms people who have SIBO suffer with and some of the disease that we often see SIBO related to.

Why is this important? because it could be the start of you getting on the right path with your GI health.

Studies show that over 50%-70% of patients diagnosed with IBS actually have an underlying infection called SIBO and whats even more alarming is that the rate of re-occurrence people experience with the standard treatment.

SIBO and Thyroid connection Dr Hagmeyer

What happens with SIBO is you develop an overgrowth of bacteria whereby the bacteria in the large intestines migrate up into the small intestines they take up shop and after you eat some sort of starch, carbohydrate, or sugar, they start to give off gas hydrogen and methane.

Both of these gases can make you feel like someone just hooked your belly up to an air compressor and pumped you full of air.

Besides feeling bloated and having constipation or diarrhea and all the other typical IBS symptoms,  here are some other symptoms you might have that may point to SIBO

Signs You Have SIBO

#1 You feel worse when you eat fiber, starch or carbohydrates or even resistant starches such as potato starch or bean starches.

#2 You feel worse when you take probiotics. Very often pro-biotics also contain a pre-biotics. So if you have a probiotic your taking right now make sure it does not contain things like inulin, arabinogalactan, FOS and GOS. These can all make your bloating worse.

#3 you feel worse when Certain sugars like Agave nectar, sugar alcohols (Sorbitol, Mannitol, Xylitol) you also want to pay special attention to things like high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, fructose, pear juice, fruit juice concentrate. (Download my Free Guide you see to the right)

All of these things become food for the bacteria and can make you feel more bloated, more constipated, more fatigued and experience more Constipation, more gas and more stomach pain. Bone Broth can also do this especially if you used more of the cartilage portion for the stock. Meaty bones should be O.K. Avoid Soda because it often contains HFCS and many artificial sweeteners. So become a label reader.

#4 You feel better when taking antibiotics- If you have a bacterial overgrowth, it only makes sense that if you decrease those nasty bugs you would feel initially better. And most people do, but what your not told is that you need to do a whole lot more than kill the bacteria you have to make them not want to come back and set up shop.

#5 You have Celiac disease or you are Non Celiac Gluten Sensitive, you started on a gluten free diet and your symptoms only improved marginally- remember people who have Celiac or are NCGS often have many other GI problems going on and SIBO is most likely another one of them. So don’t give up on the Gluten Free diet because you didn’t feel good. Chances are there is much more going on that just what you eating and infection.

#6 Another clue that you could have SIBO is that you have a history of anemia, osteoporosis, low calcium, low iron, low ferritin (iron storage) or low magnesium levels, this all indicates a malabsorption issue which is what SIBO can do.

Now if these 6 symptoms sound familiar to you and you have a history of a chronic health problem things like thyroid disease, Autoimmune disorders, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, osteoporosis, restless leg, Inflammatory Bowel disease, you may want to consider getting contacting my office to get properly tested.
