Hashimotos Disease and Thyroid Destruction. What Every Patient Must Know. Dr Hagmeyer Naperville IL Thyroid Doctor.

If you have Hashimoto’s, you need to realize that you have a bigger problem than your thyroid.

In just about every case of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the malfunctioning thyroid gland is NOT the cause of the condition. In fact, while many doctors treat Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis as a “Thyroid condition”, it really needs to be looked at as an autoimmune condition that causes malfunction of the thyroid gland.

So, while some people do need to take thyroid hormone to manage the symptoms, one will need to keep in mind that this DOES NOTHING for the cause of the disorder.

You have an autoimmune condition that needs to be slowed down. This has to be managed correctly or you’ll end up with problems beyond (and worse) than just low thyroid symptoms. And, I know those symptoms are awful enough by themselves.

But imagine….

…having depression AND no energy because you’re B12 deficient/ Pernicious Anemic

…having fatigue AND peripheral neuropathy(numbness or tingling in your hands or feet) because you have autoimmune diabetes.

…having hair loss AND car sickness-vertigo-nausea so severe you can’t take a trip to the grocery store

Horrible to think about–even for a second.

The very first thing you need to do if you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism is to have your doctor run antibody tests. You need to have TPO antibodies, TGB antibodies for hypothyroidism and/or, Thyroid stimulating Immunoglobulin antibodies and Thyrotrophin Receptor antibody if you appear to be hyperthyroid.

YES YOU NEED ALL FOUR. If your current doctor or endocrinologist will not run these tests find somebody else to do them. Even if you test negative for antibodies, it does not rule out the possibility of Hashimotos.

If those tests come back negative, there’s still about 23 other reasons why you could still have low thyroid symptoms. And you need to find a doctor that understands this fact.

If you’ve just been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, don’t give up hope. If you find the right doctor and you take aggressive action you can reverse many of the horrible symptoms that might be just around the corner.

Don’t get scared into blindly taking thyroid hormones without having a doctor who will investigate whether you have Hashimoto’s or you have Graves. Hashimoto’s can, does and will lead to other autoimmune conditions that can devastate your quality of life.

What are some other autoimmune conditions associated with or Triggered by Hashimotos?

autoimmune dr hagmeyerAgain, on the surface this might not seem like a big deal, until you do some research and discover that people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis are more likely to develop other autoimmune conditions, such as type one diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other conditions. A big reason for this is because a typical Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis treatment does nothing to address the autoimmune response, which when you really think about it is absurd.

After all, if someone has a compromised immune system, while it might be necessary to give medication to manage the symptoms, don’t you think it’s a good idea to try to do what is necessary to strengthen the immune system and calm down the autoimmune attack?

As easy as this may sound, it can actually be quite complex.

Some people think they can simply take an immune system support formula, along with a “thyroid booster”, and this combination will help to manage or cure their condition. The problem is that while the autoimmune response is what’s causing the body to attack it’s own thyroid gland, one needs to find out and investigate what’s causing the compromised immune system in the first place.

Often times other areas of the body are responsible for the autoimmune response, such as stressed out adrenal glands, Inflammation, Anemia, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, a poorly functioning digestive system, Iodine, hormonal imbalance such as elevated estrogen, (just to name a few). These are just some of the common mechanisms that can be causing or contributing to the development of your autoimmune condition.

If your endocrinologist or General practitioner is not addressing these issues you can probably expect that your condition will only get worse.
