How Digestive Enzymes Help With Bloating, Gas, Indigestion, and IBS?

By Dr. Richard Hagmeyer

ugh! on stomachUnless you’ve been eating a raw food diet your whole life, your body doesn’t need a little help… it needs a lot of help.

Enzymes are one of the most important supplement you can give your body and if you have been following my blog than we have been discussing the 10 keys to better GI health and how to resolve IBS. Today’s article is on the importance of Enzymes. When people think of taking vitamins they often forget about the importance of enzymes.

Vitamins do not deliver energy by themselves, they require enzymes for energy.

Enzymes unlock the energy in food and make it possible for the human body to function properly on all levels. Without Enzymes, you cant break down the different kinds of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. In fact your body is so smart that it makes many different enzymes to help with the digestions of all kinds of foods. It’s been once said that you are what you eat, but this is not entirely true. YOU are what you body can extract from what you eat is a more accurate statement.

Next time you think you need to take the Tums, Rolaids, or acid stopping medication ask yourself if your health problem could be better addressed by looking at the role enzymes play in digestion.

This is How It All Goes Down…… Literally. Digestive System Basics

When your food is poorly digested, you absorb nutrients that aren’t fully broken down or usable. We call this a leaky gut. These undigested proteins leak into the blood stream and will cause many problems like asthma, allergies, eczema, psoriasis, Diabetes, Celiac disease, IBS, Thyroid Problems, joint inflammation,  and many types of Autoimmune Disease.

Because your immune system will attack and defend your body against partially digested foods that get into the bloodstream. The immune system doesn’t recognize it as food. It sees these undigested proteins as toxic invaders. When this happens you don’t get the benefit of that food, and you weaken your immune system by using it in a role it shouldn’t be involved in.

In other words, you are using the immune system and metabolic enzymes daily to clean the bloodstream of undigested food particles, instead of having their full strength used to protect and repair your body.

Raw foods are enzymatically alive which means these foods have live enzymes within them to help digest 40 to 60% of that particular food. Since cooking destroys most enzymes, cooked and processed foods are enzymatically dead which means there are nolive enzymes within that food to help with digestion. This is one the reasons why pasteurized milk has no nutritional value. The pasteurization has killed all of the beneficial life giving enzymes.

These dead foods place a lot of stress on the digestive system, the pancreas, the immune system and the whole body. The digestive process works like this:

First, you chew your food, and it mixes with the saliva in the mouth. The saliva has an enzyme called amylase which starts the pre-digestion of carbohydrates. The more you chew, the better.

Then, the food is swallowed and goes down the esophagus into the upper portion of the stomach. The food stays there for about 45 to 60 minutes to predigest. It will only be able to predigest if you are eating foods containing live enzymes because the body does not supply any enzymes at this stage of digestion.

Then, the food goes into the lower part of the stomach where hydrochloric acid, Pepsin, Trypsin and chymotrypsin acid break it down further. Next, the food moves into the small intestines where the pancreas delivers digestive enzymes(Lipase, Trypsin and Chymotrypsin) to complete the digestion of fats. Next, the nutrients pass through the intestinal wall and into the blood stream where metabolic enzymes utilize these nutrients in all parts of the body and in every living cell.

Digestive Enzymes: Take them on an empty stomach.

There are a wide variety of digestive enzymes, primarily named for their function within the digestive system. Digestive enzymes are primarily located within the gastrointestinal tract (most common to the stomach and small intestine), however, the production and secretion of some digestive enzymes is accomplished by the accessory organs, including the pancreas and the liver.

Digestive enzymes are primarily activated after the ingestion of food, where they are utilized for the catalysis of reactions necessary for the proper break down of complex molecules into simple molecules.

Digestive enzymes are highly specific, catalyzing reactions of particular products, typically fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Digestive enzymes are necessary for the digestion of food products. Proper digestion is essential for the absorption of nutrients. Nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, are necessary in all biological systems of the body. If digestive enzymes are not provided in adequate amounts, this can lead to digestive problems, including many signs and symptoms.

Digestive Enzyme Deficiency: Signs and Symptoms

Enzyme deficiencies are associated with a wide variety of symptoms. A vast majority of these symptoms can be isolated to the gastrointestinal tract, as this is the primary location of digestive enzymes. The following is a list of the most common signs and symptoms associated with enzyme deficiencies. It should be noted that the majority of these signs and symptoms can also be associated to a wide variety of other diseases and conditions. Just because you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, does not guarantee that you have an enzyme deficiency.

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Heart Burn
  • Indigestion
  • Belching
  • Irregularity
  • Flatulence

Digestive Enzymes and Symptom Relief

Digestive enzymes are a requirement for proper digestion. Hence, it makes sense that a deficiency in the presence of digestive enzymes would be associated with signs and symptoms of inadequate digestion. As digestive enzyme deficiencies can be cause for a variety of digestive signs and symptoms, the alleviation of these signs and symptoms can be achieved by ingesting more digestive enzymes. Everybody should take Digestive Enzymes

Ways To Improve Your Digestion

You can improve your digestion ability substantially by adding a digestive enzyme to break down the food as it sits in the upper stomach.

In the colon, undigested proteins putrefy, undigested carbohydrates ferment and undigested fats turn rancid. This causes toxicity. These toxins can seep through the intestinal wall and get into the blood stream, which can lead to even more health problems.

Lack of digestive enzymes affects the pancreas, gallbladder, liver and every other gland in your body. Your Pancreas regulates how your body uses sugar. A lack of digestive enzymes can cause reactive hypoglycemia, Insulin Resistance (pre-diabetes) and sugar dys-regulation.

Doing this year after year puts a tremendous strain on the pancreas. And eventually stresses our immune system and reduces our metabolic enzyme supply.

Autopsies have been done on people that eat mostly cooked and processed foods. The results show the pancreas is dangerously enlarged, poorly functioning and quite often on the verge of breaking down.

There are Several ways to conserve your enzyme supply so that it doesn’t run low.

1. Increase Amounts of Raw Vegetables. Start Juicing. see my Juicing recipes here

2. Eating Organically grown, Pesticide Free Vegetables

3. Eat raw food Every Single Day

4. Take digestive enzymes on an empty stomach every time you.

5. Minimize the amount of liquid you drink during any meal.

6. Correct and Fix Your Leaky Gut.

7. Supplements should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

My Approach to IBS, Spastic Colon and GI Stress starts with…

1. A Food Sensitivity and Cross Reactive Food Panel— An IBD, Crohn’s or colitis patient may never get well without learning what foods are improperly crossing over from the inside of your gastrointestinal system into your bloodstream, creating an immune response that then builds chemistry that contributes to the inflammation. If you are accepted into our program, I will arrange for you to receive a test collection kit and blood drawn.

2. Re-establish Normal Bacterial Balance— Remember what antibiotics and other lifestyle influences did to your population of healthy bacteria? We Will Work on restoring and repopulating the good types of bacteria species.

3. Decrease gastrointestinal and Systemic Inflammation— Inflammation is now widely accepted as a contributing factor to many type of cancer including colon, prostate and rectal cancer. Inflammation is at the root of all disease processes. Certain biological markers if elevated indicate inflammation and tissue damage. We have the ability to support your body naturally and reduce inflammation.

4. Improve Digestion —Enzymes are made by your body to help digest fats, carbohydrates and proteins. If your lacks the ability to make certain enzymes these foods will not get digested and will sit in your stomach and ferment or putrefy. This can be a cause to bloating, constipation, and gas. Based on your test results we will customize the type of enzymes most appropriate to your individuality.

5. Identify any hormonal imbalancesthat are contributors. Thyroid, Adrenals Male and Female Hormones are all contributory factors affecting healthy GI Function. Many doctors fail to properly test for Hormones and consequently miss out on some very important pieces of the IBS and GI puzzle. We use advanced testing to determine if and what these hormonal imbalances are.

6. Identify Leaky Gut and its Causes- Leaky Gut is a condition used to describe the breakdown of Tight junctions. Tight junctions represent the major barrier within the pathway between intestinal epithelial cells that line the digestion tract. A Leaky Gut can cause acute and chronic diseases such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), inflammatory bowel disease, IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome Thyroid Problems, type 1 diabetes, allergies, asthma, and autism and autoimmune conditions.

7. Dietary Modification and Changes- The food you put into your body can make you healthy or sick. We test for a variety of food sensitivities. The purpose of this is to identify which foods are contributing to your IBS and what foods are not. These tests take the guessing out of what you can and what you can’t eat.

Each person suffering with IBS, Celiac, Crohn’s or any other GI problem has a different set of mechanisms or causes. Our office will customize a GI Restoration Program that is tailored to your individual needs based on advanced 21st Century testing.
