If you suffer with IBS you should avoid Dairy for a number of reasons. One of these reasons may be a sensitivity to the sugars found in milk known as lactose. Other IBS sufferers have an intolerance to the proteins found in milk namely Whey and Casein. Many Others who suffer with IBS have sensitivities to Gluten and suffer from cross reactivity between gluten and milk or gluten and many other foods (see diagram below). Advanced testing has now uncovered this to be a significant cause and reason as to why many IBS sufferers fail to improve when they only eliminate milk but continue to eat gluten. Nobody can deny that cow’s milk is an excellent food source………….for baby cows! Weighing in at around 100 pounds at birth, a calf gains around 8X its weight by the time it is weaned. Once weaned, a calf NEVER drinks milk again, and neither does any other mammalian species on the planet, except humans who once weaned from their mothers breast milk begin consuming milk designed for another species.

What is Lactose Intolerant or Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance, also called lactase deficiency and hypolactasia, is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and to a lesser extent milk-derived dairy products. It is estimated that over 75% of adults are lactose intolerant and don’t even know it.

Lactose intolerant individuals have insufficient levels of lactase, the enzyme that metabolizes or breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose, in their digestive system. In most cases this causes symptoms such as abdominal bloating and cramps, gas, diarrhea, nausea, borborygmi (rumbling stomach), or vomiting[1]after consuming significant amounts of lactose.

Studies and my clinical experience suggests that milk consumption is a major contributing forcebehind the symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome.)

Most mammals normally become lactose intolerant after weaning, but human populations have developed lactose intolerance.

IF you suffer with IBS Then there is a good chance you are also Gluten sensitive or suffer from Gluten Cross Reactivity …..despite Your Blood Tests.

Studiesshow that about 50% of Casein (protein found in milk) sensitive patients also have a problem with a protein called Gluten. This may be part of the reason that so many IBS sufferers do not improve by just by eliminating Dairy. Your IBS symptoms might be related to Gluten sensitivity. The problem is that most conventional testing as it relates to gluten sensitivity does not pick up on the other proteins that make up gluten.

There are many proteins and foods that are “considered safe” for the gluten sensitive individuals but may actually be exacerbating the immune response, causing inflammation within the GI system. This is why special testing that looks at Cross Reactivity is so vital. Cross Reactivity means there may not be gluten antibodies present in the body, but there may be other antibodies for other foods that are causing the same reaction.
