Well… take a deep Breath… This article will explain everything you need to know about this frustrating topic and one of the biggest mistakes made when it comes to Weight loss.

The first thing to do if you are experiencing stubborn weight is get your Thyroid Tested. The Test you want is a TSH, T4, T3, Free T3 and Free T4. This is the starting point for a thyroid screening. There are other tests however you need to minimaly have these 5 minimum.

After many years of treating women with Thyroid problems I have found that many women who test within the traditional Mainstream Medical “Normal” TSH range often have suboptimal Thyroid function and need further investigation. Normal does not mean Optimal!

For these women, further investigation is always warranted because of the possibility of a much more severe and serious condition called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. (learn more about symptoms here)

There is a lot of controversy in the world of endocrinology  regarding hypothyroidism treatment. There are those that believe that patients who test within the normal range but have very low basal metabolic rates and very low basal temperatures need thyroid hormone supplementation. There are others that argue that only patients with significant abnormalities should be supported with thyroid hormones.

Regardless of what camp or philosophy you tend to lean towards, the real question is not when to medicate or when not to medicate. The real problem that is still being missed is do you have other factors that are the CAUSE of your Thyroid dysfucntion.

I have found that Thyroid medications such as Synthroid or Levoxyl won’t correct the problem in over 80-90% of the population taking them.

Why 80 to 90% you ask?  The reason for this comes back to the potential for an autoimmune condition.

misdiagnosedWoman who have an autoimmune condition will often find that their TSH is up, then it’s down and then it’s up again. Another words it fails to stabilize and you find your self having your medication altered every time you see your endocrinologist or general practioner.  Very often the mechanism behind this Yo Yo effect of TSH and T4 is the destruction of the Thyroid gland caused by the immune system.

As the Thyroid gland is attaked and destroyed by the immune system there is a “spill over” of T4 hormones into your bloodstream. This “spill over” of T4 hormones will cause an elevation in your T4 levels which ultimately signals to the pituitary gland to decreases TSH levels. (This is the negative feedback loop in your body that normay prevents the hormones from getting out of control).  This process continues as long as your immune system continues to attack and destroys the Thyroid Gland.

At Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions located in Naperville, Illinois we look at the multiple factors involved in this immune attack. Biological individuality is something you are going to hear more and more often over the next 10 years becasue biological individuality requries the doctor to tailor the treatment to the individual. Because each woman and man is so uniquely different it only makes sense that treatment should also be different.

I want to make the point however, that weight gain is not sufficient evidence to conclude that someone has a thyroid problem and this should NEVER be the reason to be put on Thyroid medication.

Weight gain is one part of the picture we try to bring into focus. Efforts to lose weight without addressing related thyroid issues and other hormonal imbalances are doomed to fail over the long run and only create more disease.

The greatest success is found through a Natural and Functional approach that considers thyroid function as an integral part of your overall hormonal balance.

It is so important that if you have been on thyroid medications that you find out if you suffer from this very serious condition called Hashimotos  Thyroiditis.

Why do women experience low thyroid and weight gain with such frequency? The reasons are complex, but primarily it all boils down to this:

Women spend much of their lives dieting, usually in a yo-yo cycle of feasting and then fasting. This undermines your metabolism and decreases your metabolic rate, a compounding factor for the thyroid, especially during perimenopause.

Women tend to internalize stress, which affects their adrenal glands, pituitary, and thyroid function, resulting in increased cravings for sweets and simple carbohydrates to provide instant energy and feel-good hormones. Learn more about Adrenal Fatigue Here.

Women also experience monthly hormonal fluctuations that affect their biochemistry and ultimately their Thyroid function.
